Schools throughout the united states are all rated. This rating system basically breaks down which school is doing great academically, sports, and more. Each one of those categories determines if the school is doing what it is supposed to do. Some schools have a better athletic record than they have academic record. Even though students are supposed to hold a certain grade point average and are not supposed to be failing classes to participate in sports, that isn’t always whats going on. Majority of schools push the idea of being a professional athlete, than they push getting a better education. Also, the lack of resources in specific neighborhoods. Lastly, the curriculum doesn’t always get the students attention. That is why the school system is failing our children.
Sports are a great thing to be apart of, but it should not be held higher than a child’s education. Students are passionate about the sport that they are in, which is fine, but when a child’s grade is not looking up to par than that when a teacher and or the coach should step in because the requirements are not met for them to play this sport. When teachers or coaches do not step in, the student starts to believe that education is not important anymore. Having that type of mindset and not have anyone step in is why the school system is failing us. Education first, and sports and other activities comes later, but no one is pushing that idea.
Sports are not the only problem, having the lack of resources is setting our children up for failure. In specific areas in Chicago the school system doesn’t have enough resources to properly educate the students. The lack of resources in the school system are also another reason why students are not interested in school in general, so the students have low motivation, which the school is not able to probably boost that motivation. Students that attend a school with low resources, always end up in the streets, become teenage parent, or worse. Unless the child is good at sports or good academically, the student will have a low chance in surviving school, sadly.
Having the lack of resources, is also apart of choosing the right curriculum. Having the right curriculum goes along way in setting students up for success. Not having the right curriculum in school can set a student up for failure, which is what the school system should not want, but it is happening in many places. Having the right curriculum in classes can either boost the students interest in the class or lower their interest. Having no interest in the class can bring low motivation to the students, because one, they are not understanding the material, the subject is boring, or the way the teacher is teaching. All of these issues are setting our children up for failure, and most of the time it is not the students fault.
We all know that the school system needs a huge adjustment, but without the right staff to push the students in the right direction, resources, and curriculum to keep students attention we will not get anywhere. These issues are not the only reason why the school system is failing our children, they are so many more, but these are a start. Fixing these three issues will go along way in a students life, preparing them properly will help them further their education. Having more students further their education means that the graduating rate in high school will be higher, and the enrollment rate in colleges will also be higher. The school system is like a domino effect, starting off correctly will end up being a beautiful result.
